Rolls-Royce has announced that six of eight mtu EnergyPacks have been delivered to German energy solutions company VISPIRON to provide grid stability and allow for power trading.

The battery storage systems have largely been commissioned in solar parks in Bavaria and Thuringia in Germany and are used for intraday trading, the short-term purchase and sale of electricity delivered on the same day.

Green power supplier and member of the VISPIRON Group SEtrade GmbH makes use of the virtual power plant in combination with an auto trading system to react to price fluctuations on the stock exchange in real time.

According to VISPIRON, intraday trading is important for absorbing unpredictable changes in electricity production and demand caused by the volatile feed-in of renewable energy sources.

“With regard to increasingly volatile electricity markets, battery storage can be used to profitably market storage capacity while having a stabilizing effect on our power grids,” explained Florian Schönberger, CTO of VISPIRON Energy.

“We see a growing market in the VISPIRON business model and in our storage products and are pleased that together we can make a relevant contribution to grid and supply stability and thus actively contribute to the energy transition,” said Andreas Görtz, president Sustainable Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

The mtu EnergyPacks are fully integrable, modular systems, which are available with power ratings from 60 kVA to 2,000 kVA as well as a storage capacity from 70 kWh to 2,200 kWh and are characterised by high availability.

The products are produced in Ruhstorf, Bavaria, and are offered as 20- and 40-foot containers or as compact versions (slightly smaller than 10 feet) under the mtu brand.

In addition to the lithium-ion battery modules, the mtu EnergyPacks include electronic controls, inverters and cooling equipment.
