Fieldwork at Leeuwin Metals’ Cross Lake lithium project has identified multiple spodumene bearing pegmatites at the Spodumene Island and Metis Island prospect areas, marking the first such findings along the Cross Lake Greenstone Belt.
Leeuwin Metals’ (ASX:LM1) Cross Lake project is a district scale lithium play in Manitoba, Canada, with 70km of underexplored greenstone.
This recent project acquisition extends LM1’s exploration footprint some 2,000km2, solidifying it as the one of the largest lithium exploration projects in Canada.
It also successfully secured 100% of the entire Cross Lake Greenstone Belt, paving the way for further exploration success and regional growth.
Multiple spodumene rich LCT pegmatites
LM1’s discovery of multiple spodumene-bearing occurrences has expanded the known spodumene-bearing pegmatites identified through the re-sampling of historic drill holes and historical channel sampling.
Spodumene, a lithium bearing mineral which grades ~6% lithium, is the holy grail for hard rock lithium explorers.
Initial boots on the ground exploration has uncovered pegmatites over a 4.7km trend at the Spodumene Island and Metis Island prospect areas, defining the potential large-scale lithium opportunity in a region that has previously not been subject to systematic lithium exploration.
This work focused on the eastern and western target areas as well as the main trend where no historical drilling has occurred but multiple spodumene bearing pegmatites are present in outcropping.
Fast-tracking exploration
“We are very pleased to have completed this phase of the field work at Cross Lake,” LM1 managing director Christopher Piggott says.
“Our work has confirmed the potential large scale and under explored nature of the project.
“The level of anomalism across the trend is highly encouraging with the expectation that more will be discovered once activities are completed to expose under cover outcrop and by future drilling.
“We look forward to advancing exploration at the project with a view to be drill testing some of these areas in the first half of next year.”
What’s next?
A total of 15 pegmatites have been identified and 30 channel samples collected and submitted for analysis with results expected in the first quarter of 2024.
LM1 plans to begin drilling activities (1,000m) in the same time frame once the fieldwork program wraps up and once the drilling permit application has been granted by the Manitoba Government.
This application process will run in parallel with the Company’s ongoing engagement and consultation with first nation communities.
