All your lithium news, Friday July 21.
Word on the street (the Wall Street Journal) is that oil giant Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) has picked up a nice slice of ground in Magnolia, Arkansas, USA, where its planning to build one of the world’s largest lithium processing facilities.
The plant at the city of Magnolia — purportedly home to the World’s Largest Charcoal Grill and the World Championship Steak Cookoff –would have the capacity to produce 75K-100K metric tons/year of lithium.
Exxon reportedly picked up 120,000 acres for more than $100 million (pocket change for the firm) with a consultant for the seller estimating the prospect could have the equivalent of 4 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent.
That’s enough to power 50 million electric vehicles.
It’s all thanks to the Smackover formation (it’s real name, we checked) a geologic trend that runs from Texas to Florida, rich with saltwater brine which contains small amounts of lithium.
According to the Journal, other companies looking to build capacity in the area include Standard Lithium (CVE:SLI) and Tetra Technologies (NYSE:TTI).

Who else has news out?
Perpetual Resources (ASX:PEC)
Sand stock PEC has made a move into Brazilian lithium, inking a binding option deal over exploration ground in Minas Gerais, 20km from the Grota do Cirilo spodumene mine owned by C$5bn capped Sigma Lithium Corp (TSXV:SGML).
Latin Resources’ (ASX:LRS) advanced Colina project is also nearby.
A 60-day due diligence period has now kicked off over the +3000sqkm of greenfields (unexplored) tenure. If PEC likes what it sees, the plan is “rapid exploration in the coming months”.
The deal explains the ‘leaky ship’ action earlier in the week when the stock surged on no news before going into a halt “regarding a potential acquisition”.
Brazil has become a lithium hotspot thanks to Sigma’s success at Grota do Cirilo.
Octava Minerals (ASX:OCT)
A maiden reconnaissance drilling program at Octava Minerals’ (ASX:OCT) Pinnacle Well lithium prospect – 10km from Global Lithium’s (ASX:GL1) 18Mt @ 1% Archer deposit – failed to hit paydirt.
Best intersections included 4m at 0.066% lithium from 12m and 5m at 0.043% Li from 60m.
“A number of outcropping pegmatites have been identified in the Pinnacle Well area and also at the nearby Nimerry prospect to the East, which are being systematically explored in detail,” MD and CEO Bevan Wakelam said.
“Octava has follow up drilling planned to test additional outcropping pegmatite, at both Pinnacle Well and the Nimerry prospect.”
Gold Mountain (ASX:GMN)
Gold Mountain has received binding commitments to raise $2.25 million via a placement, with the proceeds to be used to accelerate exploration activities – including future drilling at its Brazilian lithium projects; Juremal, Custodia, Jacurici, Cerro Cora – Porta D’Agua and Salinas II.
“We believe the strong demand for this capital raising is a testament to the quality of the company’s projects,” executive director David Evans said.
Coolabah Metals (ASX:CBH)
Coolabah has jumped on the James Bay bandwagon, successfully completed the acquisition of the Hampden lithium project in Canada which includes a lithium exploration claim within 20km of Patriot Battery Metals’ (ASX:PMT) Corvette project.
The acquisition comprises 4 lithium properties in James Bay and one in the Red Lake region.
The plan now is for boots-on-the-ground exploration activities of identified targets to commence in the coming weeks.
