The prospectivity of Charger’s Lake Johnston project in Western Australia has been firmly established by the intersection of high-grade lithium at the Medcalf spodumene discovery.
It is remarkably hard after all to argue with multiple stacked spodumene pegmatites that returned assays of up to 5m grading 2.55% Li2O from a down-hole depth of 68m including a higher grade zone of 2m at 4.19% Li2O, which isn’t all that far off from the 6% spodumene concentrate that gets shipped off regularly from Australia.
And given that the other lithium intersections from its maiden drilling program are fairly consistent across the plunging 100m wide structural zone, it is fairly safe to say that Charger Metals (ASX:CHR) appears to have struck a sizeable high grade target with over 800m of spodumene outcrop at surface.
The company certainly seems to think so with drilling continuing to test for extensions to the spodumene pegmatites both along strike and at depth.
“The first very encouraging drilling results are now to hand and drilling is continuing to intersect similar multiple-sheet pegmatites within a plunging, 100m-wide, structural zone,” managing director David Crook said.
“The drill holes reported here confirm high grade lithium from surface down to a vertical depth of 210m, and the ongoing drill program is expanding the extent of the spodumene-pegmatites along the strike direction and at progressively greater depths.”
Not just nearology anymore
While the Lake Johnston project originally drew interest due to its proximity to Covalent Lithium’s Earl Grey project – one of the largest undeveloped hard rock lithium projects in Australia, the intersection of high-grade lithium in 14 of the 17 holes drilled in 2022 is a strong indicator that it has plenty of potential in its own right.
More specifically, it highlights just how rich the swarm of anastomosing to tabular pegmatites hosted in sheared mafic amphibolite at Medcalf really are.
Spodumene has been clearly observed in many of the outcropping lithium-caesium-tantalum pegmatites and have been intersected on all sections drilled to date with individual units having a down-hole wide of up to 13m.
Thicker pegmatites were also recorded on the northwestern-most drill section, which indicates a possible northwesterly plunge to the mineralisation.
Adding further interest, Medcalf is just one of several prospects located along the southern and western margin of the Lake Johnston granite batholith with Charger’s eye firmly on the Mount Day LCT pegmatite field.
Current and upcoming activity
Charger is currently drilling up to a further 23 holes at Medcalf.
It is also planning a program of core drilling later this year to test for mineralisation at depths greater than the current reverse circulation drilling rig’s capability.
Charger is currently also focused on preparing for its maiden Bynoe drill programme which has some very large pegmatite targets which are surrounded by Core Lithium Ltd, Finniss Project. Mineral Resource 18.9 Mt at 1.32% Li2O.
