The global mining industry noticed a 2.4% drop in IT hiring activity in October 2022 over the previous month, led by Anglo American’s 7.76% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.

The mining industry’s overall hiring activity declined 0.53% when compared with September 2022.

Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.24% share of the global mining industry’s hiring activity in October 2022, down 0.07% over the last three-month average share.

According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of October 2022 were 8.33% lower when compared with the previous month.

The decrease was a result of 22.03% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Database and Network Administrators and Architects drive mining IT hiring activity

Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a share of 32.92% emerged as the top IT occupation in the mining hiring activity in October 2022, an 11.58% growth over the previous month. Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers came in second with a share of 29.5% in October 2022, down 16.67% over the previous month.

The other prominent IT roles include Computer and Information Analysts with an 18.01% share in October 2022, a decline of 21.62% over the previous month, and Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 13.66% share in October 2022 and a drop of 12% over September 2022.

Top five mining companies by recruitment activity in October 2022

The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 104.17% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global mining industry during October 2022 over September 2022.

Anglo American posted 25 IT jobs in October 2022 and registered a rise of 1150% over the previous month, followed by ThyssenKrupp with 22 jobs and a 24.14% decline. Novolipetsk Steel with 20 IT jobs and En+ Group with 18 jobs, recorded a flat growth and a 125% rise, respectively, while RTI International Metals recorded a 44.44% rise with 13 job postings during October 2022.

Regional composition of IT hiring in mining industry

North America emerged as the leading region in the global mining IT hiring activity in October 2022 with a 40.37% share, which marked a 1.56% rise over the previous month.

Europe stood next with 26.09%, registering a 7.69% month-on-month decline. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 19.25% share and a 49.18% drop over September 2022.

In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 7.14% and a month-on-month rise of 130%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 7.14%, registering a 35.29% increase over the previous month.
